The Gospel According to Mark: Week 1

Mark’s Introduction to the Gospel

Key Text: Mark 1:1-11

In the first sermon of our Mark series, we focus on the beginning of the gospel. Not just where the account begins but the background as well. We look a integral parts of the background, such as: who wrote it, who it was written to, the writer’s relationship to Jesus, and why it was written. These key facts help to set the stage for the rest of the book. Then we begin this gospel account with John the Baptist, the bold witness in the desert. He is not a central figure but rather the man who came before to make way for the main event. And we close this sermon out with  Jesus, the main event. We focus on the significance of his baptism and see why it is that a perfect man chose to be baptism.
